Paterson, Halliday Gunning; Engineer Lieutenant; RN
Halliday Paterson was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He joined the RAN from the RN as an engineer officer in 1913, serving at the London Depot from 7 May 1913 to 27 February 1914, then aboard the Sydney and Penguin submarines from 25 May 1914 to 31 December 1916. After 1916 he continued service with the RAN at Penguin, Egmont, Psyche and Cerberus. He was promoted to lieutenant commander in June 1916, and resigned on 27 July the same year.
Stoker thought highly of Paterson’s engineering capabilities and wrote a detailed technical report on the AE2’s problems to the navy on 24 November 1914, clearly stating that he wanted Paterson to be involved with the submarines: ‘I would further submit that Eng Lieut Paterson should be appointed to oversee the building of the next submarines, and that he should be sent at an early date in their construction. This officer is now conversant with the necessities of the boats peculiar to the station, and I am of the opinion, which was shared by the late Lt Commr Besant, that it was largely owing to the work of this officer in attending personally to every detail in the construction of AE1 and AE2 that their steaming performances were due.’
Paterson's last known address was San Francisco in 1920.
